Sometimes, there is no need to go far away up in the mountains or in the middle of a wood to find abandoned villages or places. The cities where we all live are full of examples, just have a look around and maybe you are just few steps away from one of them. Here is another example: the Art Nouveau building of Borghese Stairway in Genoa, between the Foce and Albaro districts.
This building was built in the early twentieth century for the 'Academy of Fine Arts" but it was never established. It is dedicated to Giorgio Borghese, a Genoese which became, as reported on the marble plaque, "First Citizen of Montevideo". Over the years it was then, among the other things, a health center, a gym, a cattery, and then occasionally the place for some cultural and/or mundane events.http://luoghiabbandonati.blogspot.it/
The buiding has been abandoned for many years ... we hope that, being of great historical value, the National Architectural Heritage decides one day for public use...

I walked in recent days along the beautiful Anita Garibaldi promenade placed in Nervi (Genoa) to look for some interesting photos and I arrived here ... I hadn't gone to Nervi for a quite while and it occurred to me, to paraphrase a famous song by the great Italian songwriter Fabrizio De André, of this story telling about the famous restaurant called Marinella, along the Anita Garibaldi walk in Nervi which was a beautiful story ... Built in the early '900 it was then transformed into a rationalist building by the architect Nicoli from Milan in 1934, who wanted to represent it as a ship on the reef ... It hasn't worked for many months and it is now in the category of the Abandoned Places ... the hope, for the next year, is that it will go out soon... (a curiosity: the place is just a few hundred meters away from the famous railway Station of Sant'Ilario which is also mentioned in the famous Fabrizio De André song "Bocca di Rosa"... https://www.facebook.com/466043970185353/photos/a.466674136789003.1073741827.466043970185353/550667271723022/?type=1&theater )

BALESTRINO (I HAVE FOUND MY STARS) text by Rita Tunes & Enrico Pelos, sung and played by Rita Tunes (Ita/eng)
Balestrino...
-
... singing and playing a famous song with photos and a video from one of the most famous ghost towns in the world ... Balestrino...
"I HAVE FOUND MY STARS AT BALESTRINO" (musica di Bob Lind, testo di Rita Tunes ed Enrico Pelos, chitarra e voce di Rita Tunes) ... cantando e suonando una famosa canzone con foto e filmato da una delle più famose città fantasma nel mondo... Balestrino... ...

"I HAVE FOUND MY STARS AT BALESTRINO" (music by Bob Lind, text by Rita Tunes and Enrico Pelos, voice and guitar by Rita Tunes )
... singing and playing a famous song with photos and a video from one of the most famous ghost towns in the world ... Balestrino...
... Rita and Enrico returning to the place that saw them walk, explore and take pictures, (some of them in the movie are from the '80s) many years ago along the streets of the abandoned village ...
This song (written in 2012) is about Shel finding his "stars" in Balestrino and who sang with Rokes many years ago on the music of "Cheryl's going home" (1966) by Bob Lind, the famous song "Ma che colpa abbiamo noi" written by Mogol (Giulio Rapetti) and was, for a time, the hippie "manifesto" (in Italy) in '66 -'67. In one of the shows Shel is inspired by the American Beat Generation and he enriched the show with some musical performances. Shell Shapiro is the Artistic Director of the "Stars in Balestrino," Festival a charming village on the Western Riviera which authors (Rita and Enrico) had already visited and walked along its ancient streets decades ago. They where strucked by the coincidence that Shel would organize these shows just at Balestrino, and they spontaneously wrote this text ... remembering when they were fans of the Rokes in the mid 60's ...
A nice and affectionately witty tribute, to the Rokes and to Shel in particular and to what represented for the generations of those times; and dedicated to Balestrino and its inhabitants.

I had wanted to go back to Canate for 18 years and I was finally able to see this abandoned village again a few days ago as I had visited the place on my trekking along the Ligurian Mountains High Way trail.
The route can be covered without any problems. At Canate the meadows were blossoming, I remembered the houses with various furniture and with a certain setting but only few things remained ... some bottles ...
The main street was in order with fresh water...
